Transforming Urban Kampungs* Towards Micro-Climate Resilience

2026-2027

The project is developed by the Urban Poor Consortium (UPC), in dialoge with several experts on microclimate and urban panning actors.

The project aims to strengthen the climate resilience of Jakarta’s urban kampungs by addressing the challege of climate adaptation and broader socio-ecological vulnerabilities. Residents lern to document and collect data on local micro-climate conditions and existing community-led adaptation practices. How are residents already resonding to increasing heat, flooding, pollution, and environmental degradation?

The project will develop a simple, affordable, community-based methodology that residents can use to monitor and understand their own environments. It promotes participatory decision-making, valuing local knowledge, to design and implement inclusive mitigation and adaptation measures.

In the final months of 2027, the project will pilot a micro-climate intervention in one of the participating kampungs as a model for sustainable, community-led disaster preparedness and urban resilience.

* Kampung refers to Jakartas informal settelments. Kampungs account for about 60% of the built-up area in Jakarta.

The Kick-off event took place on June 24th 2026.
