Casa Tochan defends and promotes the human rights of migrants, asylum seekers, and other vulnerable groups in Mexico City. Having building a broad network of organizations, schools, universities, churches, and volunteers, the organization opened its first shelter in 2011. The shelter offers medical and psychological care, legal advice, and other forms of support for migrants and asylum seekers arriving in Mexico.
With the shelter at the heart of its work, Casa Tochan advocates for human rights and social justice more broadly through civic partnerships across fields such as health, education, culture, the arts, and cultural remembrance. In a context where migration and human rights work are often stigmatized, Casa Tochan is sustained by the commitment of volunteers from Mexico, Central and South America, the United States, Germany, and beyond – as well as by the support of its local community.
