our focus

México vía Berlín e.V. and Casa Tochan form the Berlin-Mexico City tandem, which connects social actors from both cities to address common global challenges through local action. By promoting the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and methodologies, the tandem supports and amplifies community-led initiatives focused on migration, human rights, civic engagement, and urban sustainability. With diverse and inclusive perspectives, it encourages dialogue among grassroots organizations, educational spaces, and local authorities. Beyond the connection between sister cities, the tandem promotes a solidarity network with a Global South focus, grounded in mutual learning, transformative action, and the creation of new ways to build community through a lens of social justice.

Casa Tochan

Casa Tochan is a civil society organisation that works to defend and promote the human rights of migrants, asylum seekers and other vulnerable groups in Mexico City. Through the solidarity and collaboration that Casa Tochan has developed, in 2011 it opened the first shelter in Mexico City, where migrants and asylum seekers arriving in Mexico can receive medical and psychological care, as well as legal advice.

Although the shelter is at the heart of Casa Tochan’s work, the organisation is also committed to spreading and advocating for the human rights of all people. Therefore, Casa Tochan’s networks include a variety of organisations, schools, universities, churches and volunteers working in the fields of health, education, culture, music, arts and crafts. The common goal is to promote social justice with a focus on cultural remembrance.

In a context where migration and human rights work is highly stigmatised, Casa Tochan is sustained by the commitment of volunteers from different areas of Mexico, Central and South America, the USA, Germany and other countries, as well as by solidarity with neighbours in the area where it’s based.
